CHARGING FIVE RUPEES FOR EACH SIGNATURE
“You all know that Gandhi used to take five rupees for his signature. He would not give his signature without charging this fee. When he was in our home, I saw many people requesting him to sign without taking money. But there was no exception to the rule. One day Baba [father] said to Rangakakababu, “Subhas, you need money. Why don’t you charge two rupees for your signature?” Rangakakababu replied, “I am not a Bania.”
Smt. Gita Biswas in her book “Purano Sei Diner Katha”. This book was published by New Age Publishers Pvt. Ltd. in February 2001. Shrimati Gita (Bose) Biswas was the fifth child (second daughter) of Shri Sarat Chandra Bose (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s second elder brother, Mejda). Smt. Gita Bose was born in 1922 and like other nephews and nieces from his brothers’ side, she too addressed Subhas Chandra Bose as Rangakakababu. Since 1928 Gandhiji visited Calcutta many times and stayed at their (Sarat Chandra Bose’s) newly constructed Woodburn Park house.

SHRI PRADIP BOSE, A COUSIN OF SMT. GITA (BOSE) BISWAS, NARRATES TO US A FUNNY STORY OF HOW HIS ADOLESCENT FRIEND MANAGED TO OBTAIN AN AUTOGRAPH FROM GANDHIJI WITHOUT PAYING THE MANDATORY FIVE RUPEE FEE
In part (1) above, we have seen from Smt. Gita (Bose) Biswas’s Bengali book how Gandhiji used to charge a fee of five rupees for giving his autograph and that this fee was mandatory and was not relaxed for anybody.

Now, I shall refer to another book titled “Growing Up In India”, written by Shri Pradip Bose, who was the youngest son of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Sejda or the third elder brother – Shri Suresh Chandra Bose. This book was published by ‘The Minerva Associates” in February 1972. I quote below extracts from pages 11 and 12 of the book. Texts in square brackets have been inserted by me.
“After my uncle’s [Rangakakababu’s] return to Calcutta [Subhas Chandra Bose returned to Calcutta on 10th March 1938 from the Haripura Congress and after attending other subsequent programmes in Bombay], our family house in Elgin Road became, almost overnight, the centre of political activity. Distinguished people, foreign journalists, visitors of all kinds came and went in an ever flowing stream during the time that he remained there. During this period the highest body of the Congress, the Working Committee, comprising the top nationalist leaders from all parts of the country met, and Sardar Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sm. Sarojini Naidu, Abul Kalam Azad, Khan Gaffar Khan, J.B. Kripalani became familiar figures. On several occasions Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru came and stayed at my uncle Sarat Bose’s house at Woodburn Park. In those days we were drawn to the place as though by a magnet. One evening Rabindranath Tagore came to see Gandhi at the Woodburn Park house. On this occasion, with a few other children, we crept softly onto the verandah and peeping through the doors into one of the rooms, saw Tagore, with white flowing beard and cream coloured garments, sitting in an armchair, serene and composed, with Gandhi sitting cross-legged at his feet. As usual we had our autograph books ready. But we felt hesitant; we should be disturbing their conversation and would bring down a severe scolding upon our heads if we were found out. However, the temptation to obtain the signature of India’s two most famous men was irresistible. After some urgent consultation we decided that our friend, Jagadish, should go in alone and then if he were caught, being a stranger he would be spared a more rigorous punishment. So gathering his courage he marched smartly in. Outside we craned our necks to see what would happen, holding our breath in silent expectation. We saw Tagore take the book in his hand and sign his name and then he handed it over to Gandhi. As a rule Gandhi would never give his autograph without taking Rs. 5/- for Harijan funds, but on this occasion he submitted to Tagore’s plea and Jagadish emerged triumphantly with a free autograph from Gandhi!”
